In 2017, Moxon Architects approached Logie Timber for assistance in the selection, sourcing and cutting of 200mm x 200mm timber.
Set to be used in the design of the company’s new Scottish headquarters, the project involved the development of a principal studio to be used as a private workspace, along with a public area, complete with cafe.
Requiring a wood that would offer both stability and durability for internal and external walls, as well as the design of external timber cobbled paving, our expert team worked with Moxon to source a suitable timber, recommending Douglas fir as the right choice for this project.
Elaine Freeman of Moxon Architects shared: “Several species were considered, and we explored the benefits and risks of each, making the most of Logie Timber’s specialist knowledge in Scottish softwoods, including the moisture content and likelihood of warping and shakes, versus availability and responsible harvesting.
“This eventually led us to Douglas fir, which was felled only 20 miles from the studio and delivered in 4.8m sections for the carpenters to cut and mill at the point of use. These cuts of Douglas fir were then used in the mass timber walls and timber cobbled paving at Quarry Studios.“
Having won multiple awards for its design, this exquisite build has been praised for its use of locally sourced Douglas fir, with judges commenting on the “confident and characterful touch” this local timber brings to the final look of the property.
