Larch

In the sawmill, larch often tends to spring off the saw, leading to wastage. Once dried, it is easier to saw and modify, but the numerous small, dead knots can blunt cutting tools. Due to its high resin content, larch is best left uncoated but can also accept exterior-grade oils, paints, stains, and varnishes well, such as Treatex’s Larch Oil. It is advisable to fit larch cladding when it is freshly cut, as it becomes more prone to splitting as it dries. If nailing larch, ring shank nails work well, provided you observe minimum spacing. For outdoor constructions, such as decks, applying a finishing treatment can enhance durability. Be cautious when larch is lying horizontally, as this position can make it more vulnerable to rotting due to sitting water.

For example, for a standard decking project using dimensions of 140x27mm with a 10mm gap between boards, Larch would cost approximately £32.44 per square metre (plus VAT), whereas Douglas fir would be around £30.64 140mm x 3.6 per square metre.
