When it comes to structural timber, strength isn’t just about saying “this is wood” — it’s about knowing that piece of timber will perform reliably in its role: whether spanning a burn, supporting a home, or forming the framework of a shed. - Why Timber Needs Strength Grading
Timber is a beautiful, natural material—but unlike a steel beam, its strength and stiffness vary from piece to piece. For structural uses (for example floor joists, beams, posts, trusses, or bridges) you need certainty. Strength grading assigns every piece a grade which correlates with its ability to bear loads, resist bending or buckling, and perform reliably in service. Ecochoice+1
At Logie Timber, many customers ask us for large-section timber for bridge builds, structural timber frames for homes or sheds. In those situations the section size, species, and load requirement go beyond typical merchant stock. Strength grading ensures that even these bespoke pieces meet performance expectations.
Visual vs Mechanical Grading — What’s the Difference?
One of the key decisions when choosing structural timber is how the grading has been done. At Logie Timber we offer visual strength grading; many larger mills rely on mechanical (machine) grading. Here’s how they compare, and why our approach gives you flexibility.
Mechanical (machine) grading
- In this method, a piece of timber is passed through a machine which typically measures properties such as stiffness (modulus of elasticity), density, or uses dynamic responses (ultrasound, resonance) to predict strength.
- The grading is often set up for high-volume, regular section sizes (for example 100 × 50mm, 200 × 50mm or similar, off-the-shelf framing sizes). At least one guide reports that standard structural softwood sizes in UK merchants include 47x100mm, 47x150mm etc.
- The machines offer speed and consistency, which suits large mills and standard framing timber production.
Visual (manual) grading
- Visual grading is carried out by a trained grader who inspects each piece of timber against defined rules: looking at knot size, frequency, grain slope, splits, checks, compression wood, shakes, curvature, visual defects etc.
- This approach allows greater flexibility in section sizes and species: at Logie we can mill bespoke sizes such as 300 × 300 mm and bigger, and lengths up to 6.2 m and then visually grade them to ensure they meet the customer’s structural need.
- Because we aren’t restricted to machine-set sizes, we can accommodate non-standard dimensions (ideal for bridge beams, large posts, heavy trusses) which many machine-grading systems can’t easily handle.
- Visual grading still operates under the same structural performance framework and standard references (see section 3).
- It requires skilled graders and good process control—hence our investment in three people training for this service (Angus, Balazs and Olly).
Why this matters to you as customer
If your project calls for something outside typical merchant stock — larger dimension beams, special species, long lengths — visual grading gives you access to structural timber that both meets certified strength classes and is tailored. It means you’re not forced into standard sizes which may limit design or require inefficient jointing.
Certified to the Correct Standard
When you specify strength-graded timber in the UK, you want to make sure the grading method is in line with recognised standards. In the UK the relevant standard for structural timber of rectangular cross section is BS EN 14081‑1:2016+A1:2019 (which is the British implementation of EN 14081‑1). Scribd+1
Although the standards are “European” in origin (EN = European Norm), they are adopted in the UK via British Standards and national annexes—so yes, this is the relevant standard for UK structural timber. Also, the certification body we work with is Certification and Timber Grading Ltd (CATG) – they provide certification for both visual strength grading and machine strength grading of softwoods and hardwoods across the UK & Ireland. Structural Timber Association
What this means for you
When you order timber from us you can ask:
- “Is this visual strength graded and certified under BS EN 14081-1?”
- “Is there a grade stamp or marking identifying strength class?” (In the UK Method A individual piece marking is required for structural timber). Scribd

- “What cross section size, length and species are we specifying, and does the grading guarantee it meets the strength class required by my structural engineer?”
Understanding Grades & What They Mean
To help specify, here’s a quick breakdown of how grades correlate to strength classes in the UK/Europe for softwood structural timber:
- Strength classes (for softwoods) include C14, C16, C18, C24, etc. The “C” stands for “Coniferous (softwood)”.
- The grade (visual or machine) assigns a piece of timber to a strength class—meaning it has a defined characteristic bending strength, stiffness, and density that meets the class.
- At Logie Timber we offer:
- GS (General Structural) equivalent to approximately C14–C18 depending on species
- SS (Super Structural) equivalent up to C22–C24 (again depending on species and size)
- Because we’re visually grading our own large section beams and posts, we can commit to larger sizes (e.g. 300 × 300mm) and still assign them the correct strength class for your design specification.
- At Logie Timber, we visually grade softwoods including Scots Pine, Douglas Fir and Larch — all sourced from Scottish forests. The table below shows how our visual grades align with the familiar strength classes used by engineers and architects:

- This equivalence means that when a structural engineer specifies, for example, C24 Larch, we can supply visually graded Super Structural Larch (SS) that meets the same strength performance while being locally grown and graded here in Scotland.
- By grading visually, we’re also able to offer this assurance across a much wider range of section sizes — from small framing timber to large 300 × 300 mm beams — something rarely possible in high-volume, machine-graded production.
It’s worth noting: when you see timber marked “C24” etc, that is the strength class. Ask for the grade stamp (or certificate) and ensure your supplier has certification in place (e.g. via CATG) and that the timber meets the specific cross-section, species and length you require.
Applications — Where Visual Grading Adds Value
Here are some of the common structural uses where our visual strength grading service really comes into its own:
- Large posts and beams in timber frame homes (especially bespoke builds where architectural design demands larger spans or heavy loads)
- Bridge builds (where sizes may exceed standard merchant dimensions and require longer lengths, heavier sections, bespoke species)
- Outbuildings, barns, workshops or sheds where you may want exposed large timber members but still need structural performance
- Custom joinery or structural elements where “standard size” timber won’t suffice, and you need assurance of strength AND size
In all these cases, using a visually strength graded piece of timber from our Scottish-grown stock means you get locally produced, certified timber in sizes and species which many standard mills don’t offer. Wet Graded vs Dry Graded — What’s the Difference?
This is an important distinction and one that your structural engineer or specifier may ask about.
Wet graded (or green graded)
- This means the timber was graded while it still has a higher moisture content (often near its initial sawn moisture content prior to drying).
- The grade reflects its strength at that moisture content, and its eventual shrinkage, movement or drying behaviour may still occur.
- For many structural uses this is acceptable when the application allows for drying in-situ, or when the design accounts for movement.
- However if a timber piece is used immediately and then dries, shrinkage or warp may occur; similarly its long-term performance may differ slightly from a dry-graded piece.
- This is the most common method for larger sectional sized timber as a beam at 300×300 would take months to fully dry all the way through.
Dry graded (often marked “DRY‐GRADED” or “DG”)
- In this case the piece has been dried (to a specified moisture content, often ~20% or less) before grading.
- The grade is referenced at the dryer state so you know that the movement of the timber from drying is minimal and that its performance will more closely match in-service conditions.
- For exposed timber, precision structural use, or where dimensional stability is important (for example large exposed beams in timber frames), dry graded is often preferred but not essential in most cases.
- In UK specification guides it is often recommended that structural softwood is of moisture content ~20% at time of grading if used in service class 1 or 2. Turner Timber – Timber Frame Experts+1
Why this matters to you
- If you’re ordering large timber members which will remain exposed (e.g. in a timber frame interior or as part of a bridge) you may prefer dry graded to minimise later shrinkage, twisting or checking, This does add cost and time as the drying process for larger timber is very slow. We can dry the timbers outside faces enough for them to be put there the planer which gives a smooth, uniformed surface which is great for indoor use where the beams will be left exposed.
- If your timber is for sheltered structural use (e.g. inside a roof, wall, under cover or bridge build) wet graded will be the best and most cost-effective way to go.
- At Logie Timber we can arrange grading either on a wet or dry basis (please ask), and we can discuss what is appropriate for your project and location (especially in Scottish climate with its dynamics of drying, humidity, exposure etc).

They are learning the detailed rules, the visual characteristics, the grading criteria and how to apply them to our locally-grown Scottish timber within our sawmill processes.
