There’s something special that happens when people come together around wood. Stories get shared, skills are passed on, and the workshop becomes a place of connection as much as creation. That spirit was alive and well when we welcomed members of Nairn Men’s Shed to Logie Timber for a behind-the-scenes tour of the mill.
For anyone unfamiliar with it, the Men’s Shed movement began in Australia and has since grown into a global community built on a simple but powerful idea: when people share time, skills, and companionship, everyone’s wellbeing improves.
The Nairn Men’s Shed has been thriving for the past three years. After taking on the old building at Nairn Station’s south platform, the members transformed it into a warm, functional workshop and meeting space, a place where a cuppa, a chat, and a shared project can brighten someone’s entire week.
Craft, Conversation & Community
The group arrived ready to explore, and it was a pleasure to show them how we turn home grown Scottish Timber into something beautiful. Their enthusiasm was infectious, the kind of curiosity that reminds us why we’re passionate about what we do.
And they truly did get lucky with their timing.
Just as the tour reached the milling area, Olly had finished slabbing a spectacular elm burr using the Alaskan mill with a 1.5-metre bar, proper old-school craftsmanship at its finest. This stunning piece of Scottish elm was cut, stacked, and set aside for its long rest in air-drying. In around two years, we’ll meet it again and coax it into something remarkable. The Shed members said it best: “That’s real timber magic.”
