What Are Scottish Timber Lining Boards?
Scottish timber lining boards are wooden panels, typically tongue-and-groove, made
from locally sourced softwoods such as:

Grades and Lengths

We offer two grades of lining boards: standard and premium.

• Standard grade boards are dimensionally accurate and can have sapwood
  (the lighter coloured sections in the pictures) on both faces. These boards are
  the cheaper option as we get a much higher recovery from the logs when not
  having to grade out the sapwood.
  Standard grade boards are our most common option and suited perfectly for
  internal use.
• Premium grade boards are dimensionally accurate but will only have the very
  smallest if any sapwood on the front face. This gives a more uniform look but
  is more expensive as we have to cut through many more logs to select out
  boards with just heartwood.

We supply the boards in mixed lengths or full length.

Mixed length – The most economical option as we cut out any defects in the boards
that don’t make the grade and supply the boards in random lengths down to a
minimum of 1m. This is a very common way to fit lining boards and give a great
result.
Full lengths – We can supply the boards in 3.6m, 4.8m and 6.1m lengths. The 6.1m
lengths are 10% more expensive due to the increase cost of sourcing suitable logs at
this length.
Full length boards are more expensive due to the challenges with grading out boards
that have no large defects over their full length. It does however leave a beautiful
uniform look to a room and keep the flow of the grain pattern.

Knot filling

Knots are a beautiful addition to any board but sometimes they can fall out and leave
holes or cracks in the board which is not acceptable.
To overcome this, we use a specially formulated synthetic polymer that is melted and
pushed into the hole or crack and left to set before being cut off flush with the top
surface with a sharp blade.
This leaves a long-lasting flexible filler that adds to the overall aesthetic of the board.

Installation Guidelines

1. Preparation
   o Acclimatise boards on-site before installation. This is a key step
   because even though we have kiln dried the boards down to around
   10% moisture content they will have been exposed to the Scottish air
   while machining and traveling to you so will have absorbed some
   moisture which causes the boards to swell slightly.
   o If the boards are fitted right away without settling to the moisture
   content of the room, there is a risk that as the boards lose the bit of
   moisture they have gained since kilning, they will shrink, and gaps will
   appear between the boards.
   o To avoid this, take the boards into the space they are to be fitted, stack
   them with the wooden separators between the layers to let the air
   circulate and check the moisture content of the boards with a moisture
   meter until they have stopped losing any more moisture. The boards
   are now at an equilibrium with the environment and ready to be fitted.
   o Ensure walls/ceilings are dry, flat, and structurally sound.
2. Fixing
   o Use appropriate fixings (nails or screws) along the tongue for a
   concealed finish or through the face of the board to make a feature of
   it.
   o Maintain expansion gaps around the very edges of the walls to
   accommodate natural timber movement that will happen as the
   moisture content of the room goes up and down throughout the year.
3. Finishing
   o Apply desired finish (e.g., clear varnish, oil, stain, or paint) to protect
   the wood and enhance appearance. We recommend a Treatex
   Hardwax Oil.
   o Consider sealing both sides for areas prone to moisture, like hallways
   to an external door or near bathrooms.
4. Maintenance
   o Regularly dust or wipe down with a damp cloth.
   o Refinish periodically depending on the type of finish applied. Treatex
   have all the information and current guidelines for this on their website.
