The Project at a Glance
In 2024, the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre set out on an exciting journey to create a brand-new visitor centre. Nestled in the breath taking Cairngorms National Park, this new space is designed to welcome the growing number of visitors who come to see Scotland’s only free-ranging reindeer herd.
The old bungalow served its purpose well over the years, but it was time for an upgrade. The new centre is all about giving visitors a better experience while ensuring the reindeer have more room to roam.
What’s New?
The visitor centre is perched on a hillside with spectacular views of the Cairngorms and the Northern Corries. It’s a mix of clever design, thoughtful use of materials, and a deep respect for the local landscape.
The paddock area has been expanded, making it easier for visitors to learn about the reindeer up close while still giving the animals plenty of space. The inside of the centre offers a warm, welcoming space to relax, enjoy the scenery, and learn more about these incredible creatures.
A Closer Look at the Design
Cladding and Materials:
- Locally sourced Larch from Logie Timber was used extensively for cladding, emphasising heartwood for its durability and natural resilience. The design required 150x22x4.8m boards paired with 73x22x4.8m cover strips, ensuring an untreated and sustainable finish.
- The building’s entrance features a Shadow Gap profile, offering a refined architectural contrast to the functional board-and-cover-strip cladding.
Outdoor Features:
- Walkways, paddocks, and fencing utilise a blend of Larch and Douglas Fir, chosen for their natural beauty and robustness in the Highland climate.
- The expanded paddock area enhances reindeer viewing, supporting conservation education and visitor engagement.
Integration with Landscape:
The structure is thoughtfully positioned to complement the hillside’s natural contours, creating an immersive experience. Expansive windows provide sweeping views, inviting the outdoors inside while ensuring the building remains a seamless part of the environment.
Sustainability at Heart
From the start, this project was all about doing things the right way—using local materials, keeping it natural, and making something that will last for years.
- Locally Sourced Timber: Sourcing wood from the area reduced the carbon footprint and supported local businesses like ours.
- Natural Finishes: By skipping chemical treatments, the timber remains safe and sustainable.
- Built to Last: We made sure everything could handle the rugged Scottish weather, from the cladding to the fences.
The Finished Product
As of December 2024, the new visitor centre is nearly ready to open its doors. It’s modern, it’s sustainable, and it fits right into the incredible Cairngorms landscape.
